What to Wear for Your Family Session

Choosing outfits for family photos can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be! The goal isn't to match perfectly—it's to create a cohesive look that feels natural, timeless, and true to your family.

Start With One Outfit You Love

Choose one outfit as your starting point, then build everyone else's look around it. A favorite dress, sweater, or color can set the tone for the entire family.

Choose Complementary Colors

Soft, neutral, and earthy tones photograph beautifully. Think cream, beige, denim, soft blues and greens, warm browns, rust, and muted blush. You don't need everyone in the same color—just choose shades that work well together.

Mix Textures & Keep Patterns Simple

Layers, knits, denim, linen, and other textures add depth and interest to your images. If one person wears a pattern, keep the rest of the outfits a little simpler so the overall look doesn't feel too busy.

Think About Movement

Your session will include walking, playing, cuddling, and laughing. Dresses, skirts, layers, and clothing that moves naturally can help create those authentic moments that make your photos feel like you.

Dress for the Season

Choose clothing that fits both the weather and your location. Layers are especially helpful for Idaho sessions and add beautiful texture to your images.

Most Importantly—Be Comfortable

Choose clothing that makes you feel confident and allows you to move naturally. Your photos should capture more than what you were wearing—they should capture your family and this season of life.
